Hardwood Flooring Options

For many homeowners, no other flooring option is as beautiful and desirable as a hardwood floor. The term hardwood flooring cover a variety of different options, and at times the diversity of hardwood flooring options can be a little confusing for consumers. Here is a simple breakdown of the hardwood flooring world.

Solid wood hardwood flooring is the most durable of hardwood flooring options. It can be sanded and refinished numerous times, which is why it often last for generations. One problem with this type of flooring Is, its tendency to expand and contract with humidity level — For this reason, contractors open a gap between the wall and the floor when solid wood flooring is installed.

Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed by combining many different kinds and grades of wood together, which makes it a lot less likely to be warped by humidity than solid wood flooring, however, engineered wood flooring is less durable, because it can rarely be sanded and refinished.

Wood laminates are not a great option for people looking for a hardwood floor. They are less expensive, but this is due to their lower quality.

Wood laminates are made by covering a layer of plywood with a layer of wood veneer. They fall apart quickly, and are typically only covered by a five year warranty from their manufactures.

Recently, more and more people have been turning to plastic and synthetic laminates for their hardwood flooring. These laminates are made from a fiberglass core that is covered by a synthetic laminate. They can be sanded like a typical hardwood floor, but they are much less expensive. They are also fairly durable, typically coming with a fifteen year warranty.

This is a quick overview of the hardwood flooring world, be sure to get more information before you install a new hardwood floor in your house.
